How To Deal With Chocolate Cravings

This is a question I get a lot. The answer I give often gets a bit of a stunned stare for a few seconds because it’s not what one expects to hear from their trainer.

Before I tell you this somewhat unorthodox answer, let me give you a quick (and slightly embarrassing) back story…..

Back in the day when I was soooo strict about food I would literally eat around my craving for chocolate often consuming 400-500 calories to avoid it. Or I would eat two huge slices of chocolate cake on the weekend.

You’ve Got A Life Sentence

Yeah, you’ll be doing this for the rest of your life…. this whole working out and eating clean thing.

One way or the other it’s happening.

Think about it:

You’re either totally hooked on living your best life. You’re addicted to the push and the sweat and hard work that comes along with training consistently. You love how whole, real foods makes you feel. You can’t imagine NOT living the fit lifestyle.

Or perhaps eating clean and working out aren’t your most favorite (whaaat?) but you know that to keep at a reasonable body composition (how much fat vs how much muscle) and general health, you need to keep some things in check.

Lastly, and I hope this doesn’t happen, perhaps you’ve neglected your self-care for too long and now you are under doctors’ orders to make changes to the way you move and eat to preserve your life.

So see, no matter how you slice it, we’re all in this for life.

With that said, unless you’re a fitness model, figure competitor or professional sports athlete, you need to figure out a way to make your eating and movement doable for life.

Meal Prep Simplified

Sometime when talking with clients we just can’t seem to get past this one thing.

Freeform eating vs having a plan.

Freeform eating is when you just “try to make better choices”. You’re basically winging it. Assessing what your options are and making the best decision for you at the time.

That’s totally cool, and for the most part if you’re not trying to change your body composition (how much fat and/or muscle you have) it’s a great, no-obsessing way to eat; just eat healthy most of the time. Simple as that.

But when the specific goal of having less fat/weight or more muscle is your focus, freeform eating is not the most efficient path. You need a plan.

The biggest obstacle however seems to be WHAT to eat.
